Introduction

Hello everyone! My name is Francisca and I am majoring in English. I was born and raised in San Diego and I am an incoming transfer from Southwestern College. I have always enjoyed reading since I was a kid, so I am excited to be reading Moby Dick and taking this class. Some things I like to do are listen to music, hang out with my sister, play video games and go to punk rock/hardcore concerts.

I am looking forward to reading this book and discussing it with you all!

Week 1 – Introduction: Fifty Shades of Jeannnnnne

Hi y’all, my name is Jeanne Taylor (she/her)! I’m majoring in both Film and English, hoping to be a director and writer. This is my last semester here so I’m hoping to really push myself this time around, doing as much as I can and all. I love writing and am so excited to see what experimental writing looks like, as opposed to an experimental film or screenplay. My films are typically about Queer Identities and Queer Self-Love, things I feel passionately about and look for in art everywhere. Moby-Dick, naturally, will be no exception! I hope to really dig into the novel and hope to find something I never expected, or perhaps something even more sour than once thought, if you will. I look forward to this class and cannot wait to begin to dig, as it were. Should be good!

For those wondering about my personal taste—there has to be one of y’all that’s wondering—some of my favourite films include Grave (dir. Julia Ducournau), Sibyl (dir. Justine Triet), Portrait de la jeune fille en feu (dir. Céline Sciamma), and, of course, I Saw the TV Glow (dir. Jane Schoenbrun). A little bit of body horror and some messy drama and broken hearts can’t really go wrong with it in my opinion, and even in my damned heart if we’re being real here. I adore experimental filmmakers like Maya Deren, David Lynch, other such beautiful names, I have not seen their films in what feel like forever. I would love to know some favourites of any of y’all, if anyone feels compelled to do such a wonderous thing as sharing about one’s tastes.

Nice to meet you guys! :) Let’s all be great friends!

Hello everyone! My name is Mylo, and I am currently a fourth-year student at SDSU. Truth be told, I am not great at public speaking at all. I often find myself struggling to even come up with ways of speaking without feeling nervous, and most of the time, I feel kind of slugghish for paying too much attention to this problem. After coming to this class, and being able to openly talk to everyone in the class makes me feel a sense of relief because I feel comfortable while introducing myself to you guys. I know I will probably struggle a few more times to speak while I’m in the class, and I hope I will be able to overcome this fear so that I’m going out strong instead of feeling like I did not achieve much.

A little bit about myself: I absolutely love films with all my heart. I have been watching films ever since I was young, and being able to grasp onto the stories, the characters, the dialogues, the emotions that the whole film portrayed are so rich and powerful, which inspires me to become a filmmaker one day. I love to cook, especially Italian dishes. I love to play games, instruments, and archery. I feel like these hobbies mostly take up all of my life, and there are probably more to come.

I hope that we can all be great friends while enjoying Moby-Dick alongside the heartfelt discussions that I am excited to have with you all.

Introduction

Hi everyone!! My name is Marley Feasel and I am an English major. This is my first year here at SDSU and I transferred here from MiraCosta College up in Oceanside. I am actually originally from Florida and lived there for about nineteen years before moving up to Carlsbad, so I’m definitely looking froward to exploring more of the San Diego area, rather than just North County, now that I’ve moved down here!

A few other things about me, I love going to concerts (my fav artists being Taylor Swift, Hozier, and Chappell Roan), the beach, reading (my favorites being the Picture of Dorian Gray, the Hunger Games, and literally any cheesy romance book I can find), and watching movies (my favorites being Across the Universe, Mamma Mia, 27 Dresses, and Aftersun). My dream for after I graduate is to pursue a career in book publishing and I absolutely love art and want to get better at painting.

I am super excited for this class and can’t wait to learn more about everyone!!

Introduction

Hi everyone! My name is Alyssa North. I am a junior majoring in English and this is my first semester at San Diego State. I spent my first two years at Palomar college in San Marcos in order to help my family with my younger siblings, but with transferring I hope to step out of my comfort zone. Some of my hobbies are reading, writing, and photography. After finishing college, my hope is to travel the world and eventually pursue a career in publishing or teaching. I am extremely excited for this class because I have never read Moby Dick and honestly I never would if it was not for this class. The book seems intimidating to me, but I am excited to see if I like it and to hear all of the different opinions/interpretations that everyone has!

Introduction!

Hi! My name is Alyssa Godwin. I’m a senior (last semester, yay!) double-majoring in English and History. I first began my journey at San Diego State by completing most of my English degree (except for this singular course, actually) before transitioning to my History major. I focus primarily on women’s and gender history, World War II, and the French Revolution. If not in the library or the cafes scattered around campus, you can probably find me on the fifth floor of Arts and Letters. I work extremely closely with the history department as a tutor, grader, and member of various historical honor societies (yay, history!). Some fun facts about me, in case we ever find ourselves in an individual trivia scenario, are that I love Studio Ghibli productions, pit bull rescue/fostering, and my favorite book of all time is Louisa May Alcott’s Little Women. I will very passionately die on the Louisa May Alcott fan club hill. I’m so excited to begin this course with all of you and dive deep into this novel!

Introduction post :)

Hi y’all! My name is Sophia. I am a psychology student with an emphasis in neuroscience, but I love reading and writing. I don’t really plan to do anything with my degree since I’m working toward a full time career in photography. One of my biggest hobbies is traveling–this year I went to my 18th country! Some of my favorite books are Kokoro, Brave New World, and Schopenhauer’s Porcupines. I’m looking forward to making some new connections this year and having engaging conversations in this class that challenge me.

Hi!

Hi everyone, my name is Graciela and I’m super excited to be taking this class with you guys. I am a San Diego native, I actually grew up near SDSU towards La Mesa area. I love San Diego so much, it’s perfect (in my opinion) and my family and friends live here. I just transferred to SDSU from San Diego City College. I initially had a difficult time with my higher education and it took me years to finally figure out what I wanted to do, but I found so much passion in English & History so that is how I got here. Somethings I love are traveling and spending time with people I love, it’s the best when I can do both. One of my goals in life is to visit all the national parks, I’ve gone to Yosemite and Yellowstone so far. Nature relaxes me a lot and I try to take time everyday to enjoy it when possible. I am looking forward to reading this giant book and seeing where it goes.

Introduction

Hi class, I’m Diego. I’m a third year transfer from Southwestern college and I am excited to take these higher level English classes. I’ve always loved literature, reading, and stories in general since I was a kid. Whenever I wasn’t watching movies, I was reading. Although I have a dream of being able to write my own stories, I view that more as a personal hobby/interest. What I really want to do with my degree is use it as an avenue into law. I’ve always been obsessed with ideas of justice and stories even slightly related to this topic, and I’ve always admired the people that help others with their knowledge of the law, even if it is flawed. Other than law and crime stories, my second favorite genre is horror. Some of my favorite books are The Silence of the Lambs and Dracula and two of my top three favorite movies are Scream and Alien. I also want to read more classics, I have a lot of unopened ones on my bookshelf, but Moby Dick is one of the ones I did read, mainly because it was constantly referenced throughout Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain and I wanted to understand why. I’m looking forward to reading it again and getting a better grasp on it with everyone throughout the semester.
