Week 1 – Introduction: Fifty Shades of Jeannnnnne

Hi y’all, my name is Jeanne Taylor (she/her)! I’m majoring in both Film and English, hoping to be a director and writer. This is my last semester here so I’m hoping to really push myself this time around, doing as much as I can and all. I love writing and am so excited to see what experimental writing looks like, as opposed to an experimental film or screenplay. My films are typically about Queer Identities and Queer Self-Love, things I feel passionately about and look for in art everywhere. Moby-Dick, naturally, will be no exception! I hope to really dig into the novel and hope to find something I never expected, or perhaps something even more sour than once thought, if you will. I look forward to this class and cannot wait to begin to dig, as it were. Should be good!

For those wondering about my personal taste—there has to be one of y’all that’s wondering—some of my favourite films include Grave (dir. Julia Ducournau), Sibyl (dir. Justine Triet), Portrait de la jeune fille en feu (dir. Céline Sciamma), and, of course, I Saw the TV Glow (dir. Jane Schoenbrun). A little bit of body horror and some messy drama and broken hearts can’t really go wrong with it in my opinion, and even in my damned heart if we’re being real here. I adore experimental filmmakers like Maya Deren, David Lynch, other such beautiful names, I have not seen their films in what feel like forever. I would love to know some favourites of any of y’all, if anyone feels compelled to do such a wonderous thing as sharing about one’s tastes.

Introduction!

Hi! My name is Alyssa Godwin. I’m a senior (last semester, yay!) double-majoring in English and History. I first began my journey at San Diego State by completing most of my English degree (except for this singular course, actually) before transitioning to my History major. I focus primarily on women’s and gender history, World War II, and the French Revolution. If not in the library or the cafes scattered around campus, you can probably find me on the fifth floor of Arts and Letters. I work extremely closely with the history department as a tutor, grader, and member of various historical honor societies (yay, history!). Some fun facts about me, in case we ever find ourselves in an individual trivia scenario, are that I love Studio Ghibli productions, pit bull rescue/fostering, and my favorite book of all time is Louisa May Alcott’s Little Women. I will very passionately die on the Louisa May Alcott fan club hill. I’m so excited to begin this course with all of you and dive deep into this novel!

My Introduction

Hello, my name is Caitlyn, and I am a third year majoring in ECL with a minor in History. This is actually my first semester at SDSU, as I recently transferred from Miramar College.

I have loved books and literature from the moment I could read, and particularly have fallen in love with the sci-fi and fantasy genre.

Some of my favorite books include Sword of Kaigen by M.L. Wang and Mistborn by Brandon Sanderson.

I have a second degree black belt in Songham Taekwondo, and have been training for almost a decade. I also received my full instructor certification for Taekwondo this past Saturday, and was the first person in over a decade from my school to receive that honor.

I initially choose this class to fuffill a requirement, not even realizing that it was about Moby Dick until the day before class started. Initially I was reluctant, as I read the book my first year of college and did not enjoy it. However, I have grown a lot over the past 2 years, and want and look forward to giving it another shot!

Hello guys, gals, and other pals!

Hello everyone! The name is Dianna Sittidet (She/They). I am 22 years old and a transfer student from Mesa College. This is my 3rd semester as an ECL major at SDSU since transferring. I’m excited to tackle my ability of withstanding larger books with Moby Dick considering it is such a classic within the literary world. I genuinely do not know much about it other than it being about some “guy” pursuing and being obsessed with a whale. That description alone didn’t sound too engaging to me, but now that a class is requiring it, why the heck shouldn’t I analyze it further and give it a chance to potentially and seriously wow me?

I’m not entirely sure as to what I fully want to do after graduation, but all I know is that I want writing to be involved. I’m always finding ways to inspire myself from different pieces of media, whether it be books, games, movies, TV shows, I’ll never fail to stare at something and have it creatively affect the way I write or explore the world. If that didn’t explain it, I am very much into video games and TTRPGs such as D&D and Monster of the Week. I do not stray away from calling myself a nerd with interests! I’m currently playing through Persona 5 Royal and Nier:Automata, but if we really wanted to get into my most solidified interest, I am a HUGE fan of the horror genre. Psychological, supernatural, analog, you name it. I’m always looking for new things to give me a freight, and while the interest can get a little morbid, I think the horror genre can be one of the most interesting things out there with how versatile it is.

I’m writing this in the midst of discovering a new band called Inkubus Sukkubus, and I’d recommend their song Vampyre Erotica. (If I had to pinpoint another horror interest, I’m big into vampires.)

I cannot stress enough how stoked I am to hear about everyone’s opinions on the book rather than the book itself, especially those who have not picked it up before. I know I myself will be brutally honest about my review this semester, especially with our seminar set up.

And in case I don’t see you, good morning, good afternoon, and good evening!
